User Reviews Of Last
Knights:
Welcomings again from the darkness.
Medieval action movies seem to be hit and overlook. The most excellent have
complex power and sub-plots struggles punctuated with large scale sword-fight series,
while the lesser movies typically offer little more than clanking sound effects
and faux castle settings. Falling someplace in-between is this newest from
director Kazuaki Kiriya. For by any means reason, the massive sets and timely
costumes do not make up for the dawdling pace and scarce exploit sequences. The cast is extremely strong and includes
Clive Owen, Axsel Hennie, Shohreh Aghdashlo, Peyman Moaddi,Cliff Curtis, Morgan
Freeman, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Sung-Kee Ahn, Noah Silver and Ayelet Zurer. Mr.
Freeman narrates a slightly mystifying opening that sets the stage for a multi-racial
time stage that is commonly referred to after the "great wars". We almost
immediately enough learn that Freeman's Lord Bartok is one of the superior guys
under the Emperor's reign of extortion creature carried out by the weasely
Minister Gezza Mott. Refusing to be conventional to Gezza's game, Bartok is shamed
and, umm … relieved of his duties – in a manner be suitable the period.
Bartok's loyal Commander Raiden and the extra followers are cast out of their
homes. Watching Owen drop into a drunken slumber
oblivious to civilization goes against all instincts we have for the gracious
warrior who is so dedicated to "The Code", however it is the most fun
offered by the movie outside of the two main struggle sequences. Mr. Owen and
his continually furrowed brow seem a bit too high class for this movie, only
because everything also should be stamped with the "Acme" symbol made
so accepted by Wile E Coyote. In spite of the best efforts of the cast, the
story lacks real feeling and the spectacularly elaborate plan for retribution
is not given the attention it deserves … though I so was hoping somebody would
scream "Have fun attack the castle, boys!"
The opportunity fight scene is well
staged and leaves us wanting additional, but the remain is well over an hour … display
time filled with bleak, gray scenes of not a great deal happening. Gezza Mott's
lead henchman does find a very spirited contest with Raiden, other than the
final showdown among Raiden and Mott is a important letdown and a minor payoff
for remaining confident through two hours.
